Random Thoughts On A Song From 2002:
If Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" isn't one of the most emotionally compelling covers of all time, then I'm not sure what is. Cash took a Trent Reznor song and delivered it in a more desolate and morbid tone than the original version, something that would seem inconceivable on paper. In November of 2002, Rick Rubin continued his work producing the series of Cash "American Recordings", with "American IV: The Man Comes Around". After hearing the song and thinking "Wow, what a fantastic cover"...I saw the video at the beginning of the the next year and am still haunted to this day by it. It's visually stunning and sad. Johnny and June Carter, older, looking near death, images of the past married with the present. It is the only music video ever where I actually tear up...every freaking time. It's a true testament to morality and Johnny Cash provides the perfect soundtrack. "My empire of dirt" is transformed into Cash's epitaph. He really looked ill from his diabetes. Sadly, June Carter died a few short months after the video was shot. The man in black, with a broken heart, died in September of 2003. But what a fitting end to one of the finest careers in modern music.
"I Will Find A Way"
