Top Artists Of All Time: Division 28-80's Pop/Pop Rock

As we wind down the genre rounds of The Top Artists Of All Time we take a step back into the prime MTV generation this week as our panel tackled picking 6 favorite artists from the 80's Pop/Pop-Rock genre. It ended up being a logjam near the 8 spot. The Top 8 Artists move on to the semifinals round beginning on October 19th. How do we get the Top 8? Points are scored 6 (for a 1st place vote) thru 1 (for a sixth place vote) or 3.5 points (for No Order). Out of our 20 voters, 17 (85%) cast ballots this week for 80's Pop/Pop-Rock. Out of 32 artists, 26 received at least one vote. 4 different artists received first place votes.

U2 soared to number one without any problems and are now number 3 on the overall leader board (behind Johnny Cash and the Beastie Boys) after 28 rounds. Bono and the gang rang in 16 of 17 votes (the 17th ballot passed on a vote because they figured U2 was safe to advance). Prince also scored big time taking the second place position this week on 14 of 17 ballots with 4 first place votes. Peter Gabriel also did very well in the genre garnering some first place votes and commanding a respectable 3rd place poistion among the Top 8. 12 of 17 voters threw a vote to INXS who never scored higher than third on a ballot but wrangled enough points for 4th overall in the genre. Hall & Oates and Madonna dueled for the 5th spot with Madonna edging out Daryl and and John. If these six were cakewalks into the Top 8, then voters had troubles coming together for a consensus on the final two spots which meant a tight dash for 7 and 8. Janet Jackson got the 7th place nod while Huey Lewis & The News (while at the bottom of the overall leader board) got just enough to eek out Tears For Fears for the final spot. Christian Bale approves.
