#439: The Police-Can't Stand Losing You (Top 500 Modern Rock Songs Of All Time)

#439
(Top Modern Rock Songs Of All Time)
Song: "Can't Stand Losing You"
Artist: The Police
Release Date: August,1978
From the Album: Outlandos d'Amour (1978)

Quick Take: Early on, it was pretty difficult to get away from the Police as new wave-reggae act. Not that there’s anything wrong with that – they were really really good at it. “Can’t Stand” stands out in the canon of their work because it isn’t only a “got dumped” song but one that not only has somewhat funny moments – when the narrator laments his returned AND scratched LP records, for example – but, well, suicidal ones. By the end of the song, it’s pretty apparent that our main character has hit bottom and only sees one very unfortunate way out. Not many bands can pull off a song about suicide – the song itself is essentially a suicide note blaming that chick that ruined his life – and make it admittedly danceable. The next question that has to be asked is if that’s a good thing or not. But it really doesn’t matter. It’s a solid pop tune that, at the very least, is solid foundation for the Police’s future work, and at the very most, an adept tongue-in-cheek pop tune that walks the fine line between depressing subject matter and hook laden new wave.
