The Federation of BC Writers Second Annual BC Short contest is open to submissions from Canadian Writers. This year’s judge is JJ Lee, author of?The Measure of a Man: The Story of a Father, a Son, and a Suit,?published in 2011 and shortlisted for the 2011 Governor General’s Award.

Adbusters Media Foundation is looking for a politically savvy Senior/Web Editor for our Vancouver office. The Senior/Web Editor will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to develop original content for Adbusters magazine and our websites, and will be expected to demonstrate strong research skills with the aim of getting to the core of contemporary political, economic and environmental issues. The successful candidate will be expected to research, curate and write original articles for publication in print and online, and will need to have a keen eye for storytelling and design. Political engagement with the pressing issues of our time is essential.

Key Qualifications:

  • Strong creative writing and editing skills
  • Familiarity with Adbusters’ magazine, websites, books & campaigns
  • Experience working with a team and managing a multitude of writers and
    contributors
  • Bonus: familiarity with software such as InDesign, Photoshop and WordPress

Writer Profile: Darren Amner

I am a recent graduate from the journalism certificate program at Langara College where I worked on The Langara Voice newspaper and its digital edition. As a reporter I researched story ideas, conducted interviews, and wrote stories for the program’s weekly and daily newspaper. As an editor I edited stories, produced podcasts, edited video and posted blogs to the Voice’s online WordPress site.

In 2004, I graduated from the London School of Journalism with a diploma with distinction. When I lived in the UK, I worked as a Freelance Writer & Film Journalist for Eyeforfilm.co.uk, which led me to attend film festivals in London, Venice and Berlin. I also worked as a magazine writer for DV8, Hotdog and DVD Review publications for Future Publishing.

August 28, 2019 – May 31, 2020 Residency

Regina Public Library invites applications from Canadian creative writers for the position of Writer-in-Residence. The candidate of choice will have the flexibility to organize and attend events throughout the residency period.

The successful candidate will spend at least 40 per cent of his/her time working with Regina Public Library to schedule and deliver individual consultations, community/school visits, and group workshops and seminars in alignment with RPL’s vision, mission, and values. Up to 60 percent of his/her time will be devoted to personal writing projects.

Our candidate of choice will have:

  • Experience working with the public;
  • Effective interpersonal skills;
  • Encouraging attitude with a strong ability to inspire others;
  • Adept at handling group facilitation activities in order to bring members of the public together in a shared experience;
  • Exceptional instructional skills aimed at ensuring positive learning, and a demonstrated ability to provide constructive criticism in a compassionate manner;
  • Experience managing a public social media presence on Facebook; and
  • Published works, and a background in the literary field in Canada.

Please include a cover letter that provides:

  • Information on why you are a good candidate for this position, taking into consideration and addressing the requirements outlined above;
  • An explanation of your writing – the genres you prefer, the format of your writing (poetry, short fiction, etc.) and where your works have been published; and
  • Examples of previous experience working with the public and leading workshops, one-on-one coaching and mentoring, etc.

Also provide your CV or résumé; a 10-page writing sample (no more than 10 pages, please); and three letters of reference, one from a supervisor or community leader who can attest to your leadership skills. References should include a daytime and evening phone number and an email address.

Successful applicant will be asked to complete a Criminal Record Check.

Salary: $40,000 for the residency period.
